Location: Rashid, Egypt
Typology: Wood and Textile Craft Center
Year: 2019
Supervised By: Dr. Ahmed Abdel Ghaffar, T.A. Youssef Mamdouh
INTRODUCTION:
Culture is the vital component that differentiates each nation from the other; therefore it is a duty to conserve what has remained from the past. Also, add a layer of innovation for the future, ending up with a mixture of old and new that does not oppose but serve the need for cultural diversity. The fusion of history with a contemporary vision is the aim of this project on the large scale. But in a narrower scope, the craft center aims to act as a social catalyst for cultural exchange; being a home for its makers, seeking education, and an open venue for its visitors.
Successful educational facilities act as catalysts; designing interactive and cultural learning spaces where the community is mainly involved. So one of the approaches is to make this place an initiative; the start of the revitalization of Rashid comes from the center of knowledge and education. Therefore, the generated research question is; how to change a city through the architecture of an education facility and how it would force people to use it in a certain way through activities and interactions.
CONCEPT STATEMENT:
Reviving the glory of the past through the interlacement of the relation between the community and its crafts, Therefore bringing complexity and unity.
