The World Energy Use poster series will help everyone understand what sorts of things are done to generate electricity, where, and why. The goal is to provide a delightful visual explanation of power infrastructure across the world.
Each poster will have it's own visual twist and an unique composition. For nuclear power, I crafted new radiation trefoil symbols to represent each country, and used hexagons to mimic a reactor core layout. For hydropower, I created tiny little maps of each dammed river, and formed the badges into the shape of an arc dam. I have many more ideas for the rest.
The Nuclear Power poster is complete besides revision; the rest are work-in-progress. See link for image and data credit.
These are the icons I made to represent each type of power.
Coal Power: Shovel-wheel thing you might see used to dig open-pit mines.
Oil Power: Pistons and ignition chamber.
Methane Power: Gas range.
Nuclear Power: Typical trefoil radiation symbol. The other icons are radial to match it.
Hydropower: Turbine blades.
Geothermal: Earth's core.
Wind Power: Top-down view of a helical turbine, because the normal ones look boring.
Solar Power: Stylized solar panel plant layout.
Fusion Power: Yonic tokamak.
There are a few other ways to generate electricity, such as biofuel or tidal energy, and those will be added as the project progresses.
