Description
Installation of Washi lanterns at the Japan Society in Manhattan.
  • j-CATION
    April 2011
  • The 2011 annual j-CATION event, a celebration of Japanese culture, was entitled Concert for Japan.  Held at the Japan Society in Manhattan, this event helped raise money for the Japanese Earthquake Relief Fund.
Contributors included Lou Reed, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Philip Glass.
  • The atrium of the Japan Society.
  • My washi paper "pod" design was one of three RISD student's designs displayed in the Japan Society as part of a public, month long installation.  The other two students included Timothy Dobday (B. Arch '15) and Fernando Diaz ('13 I.D.).
  • The designs evolved from studies in massing and folding Washi rice paper.
  • As part of the event, we hosted a paper-folding workshop teaching visitors to make our washi lanterns, so that they could personally contribute to installation.
  • Visitors could also write a prayer or wish for Japan's recovery and attach it to the installation.
  • My pod design was attached to the insides of the railings.
