Material Experiments: Wood

Wood 1 is a required sophomore studio for industrial design, meant to introduce us to wood as a material and promote problem solving and material sensitivity.

These are projects from the latter half of the semester, when we had the opportunity to explore the material more independently.

Final project (part 1): use bent lamination to create a form that can hold at least four apples.

My goal was to create a form that naturally suggested where the apples should sit while remaining true to the original laminated curves.

Final project (part 2): use multiple pieces to carve a vessel with different treatments of the inner and outer surfaces.

I wanted my vessel to sit horizontally on the table, but be more interesting than a bowl. My vessel is made with four parts, which allows the interior to extend into the point and still be enclosed.

Shaping/finishing tools used (from rough to fine): chisel, hand plane, rasp, sandpaper, Danish oil
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Turnings: turn two pieces. Incorporate a convex form, a concave form, and at least one defined shape.
