Even when there is no language accompanying an
image, rarely do our minds allow that image to remain mute. We want it
to explain itself somehow. Words emerge and linger in the surrounding
space.
The verbal-visual mélange characteristic of print
and online media today is filled with emphatic demands: Want me. Think
this. Remember that. Consciously or unconsciously, the demands loiter
and affect our decisions, directions, and perspectives.
These paintings integrate language into the
picture plane directly. The words, drawn from place, action, and force,
loosely report and intermingle with collected media images to create a
new meshing of sign and form.
