Discovering Torque Through Play

The purpose of this project is to help children understand fundamental physics principles. Interacting with the "works-like model" gives the user an understanding of the way leverage and torque work. This is achieved through various sized wrenches, which can be picked up and used to tighten/loosen the extruding bolts. By experimenting with the model, the child can come to see how the longer wrench (and thus the longer lever arm) makes the bolt easier to move. Though he/she may not realize it, they are understanding that the amount of torque is equal to the length of the lever arm multiplied by the applied force.
