Here, Carthage is an ‘othered’ world, hidden amidst a luxuriant forest of overgrowing plants. Dido, the Queen of Carthage, falls in love with Aeneas, only to be abandoned shortly thereafter. From the liminal space behind and between the broken arcs, the villainous sorceresses plot against the lovers and characters chance upon each other’s betrayals. With an unconventional offstage setting, the set is designed to work in unison with the architectural features of the room, to transport viewers into the mysterious kingdom of Carthage.
