LS&A provided architecture and interior design services for the renovation of a suburban office and warehouse space for a company that designed and manufactured equipment that utilized electron beams for sanitation, quick drying and other esoteric applications. Our design concept was inspired by the electron beam itself that had a cobalt blue appearance when working. We utilized the cobalt blue color as well as the linear nature of the beam, for furniture, lighting and other finishes, as well as for way-finding, delineating the “tour” for investors and customers. One of the counter-intuitive space planning suggestions made by the design team was to locate the cafeteria/multi-purpose meeting room on the front windows, so that employees who worked in the windowless manufacturing, warehouse or clean room areas could have access to light and a relaxed environment. Since the company was just past the start up phase, inexpensive materials and used furniture were specified. Our scope of services included: Programming, Space Planning, Design Development, including the design of custom built-ins, Furniture Selection and Specifications, Construction Documents, selected vendor Bidding, Construction and Installation observation/administration, and Punch List.

Icosystem
Cambridge, MA
LS&A provided architecture and interior design services for the renovation of corporate offices while the space remained occupied. Icosystem provides management consulting services using nature based models. Our design concept was to add the private offices in a more organic aesthetic, and because the work had to happen while the space was occupied, office were built using an on-site assembly of polycarbonate panels and exposed metal studs (so no sanding of drywall compound. A new café and colorful palette added to the up-beat atmosphere. An alcove with a 2 chairs and a telephone replaced the old large reception area, so that more people could fit into the existing space. Our scope of services included: Programming, Space Planning, Design Development, Construction Documents, selected vendor Bidding, Construction and Installation observation/administration, and Punch List.

Cambridge, MA
LS&A provided architecture and interior design services for the design of office space in a new building in Cambridge, in association with designer Tim Mulhavey. netNumina provides technical back office web-design services specializing in financial services clients. The design concept was to use organic shapes, modern/industrial design details, and colorful accents, in keeping with the young and casual staff. Blurring the line between home and office, the space was designed to attract and retain the best and brightest programmers. Interestingly, a mini Mosque was designed into an interior space so that observant Muslims, many from Indonesia, could pray according to their traditions. Our scope of services included: Programming, Space Planning, Design Development, including the Selection and Specification of new Furniture and custom designed 120 degree, arc-shaped “anti-cube” workstations, Construction Documents, selected vendor Bidding, Construction and Installation observation/administration, and Punch List.

Sayers Computer Source
Westwood, MA
LS&A provided architecture and interior design services for the renovation of an old industrial warehouse building into new office space, light assembly and warehouse for a computer value added reseller based out of Chicago. Yes, former football running back, Gayle Sayers is the founder of the company. The most expensive elements missing from the space were code compliant bathrooms, and windows appropriate for office space. Utilizing the enormously high ceiling heights, and playing off the industrial prior use of the building and the high tech nature of the company, the custom, inexpensive fluorescent lights behind polygal panels that float/fly in the space help establish the corporate brand and up to the minute design aesthetic. The contractor came up with the clever and inexpensive idea of using dryer vents as a wire management tool. Bold color was the finishing touch to the transformation. Our scope of services included: Programming, Space Planning, Design Development, including the Selection and Specification of new Furniture, Construction Documents, selected vendor Bidding, Construction and Installation observation/administration, and Punch List. The client was so pleased with the results that they hired LS&A to work on a new corporate headquarters building outside of Chicago, a project that was de-railed in the fall of 2008.

LS&A provided architecture and interior design services for the renovation of an old industrial warehouse building into new office space for a computer and information technology support services company. The design concept was to respect the amazing old brick structure while updating the interior for today’s office worker, and providing casual meeting space in a café and lounge. Industrial lighting was used that looks like it could have been original to the structure. Bold color on columns, carpet and furniture adds to the up-beat and productive environment. Our scope of services included: Programming, Space Planning, Design Development, including the Selection and Specification of new Furniture, Construction Documents, selected vendor Bidding, Construction and Installation observation/administration, and Punch List.

Genome Theraputics Corporation
Waltham, MA
LS&A provided architecture and interior design services for the renovation of an old suburban office building into a home for a biotechnology and gene identification company. Our concept was to utilize typical affordable office items, such as hollow metal knock down frames for doors and “side-lights” but use them in novel ways (mount at different heights and paint in bold colors). We kept the original granite floor in the lobby, but extended the corridor in affordable black, white and gray VCT. We created custom light fixtures by combining an inexpensive fluorescent strip light with a custom perforated metal cover. The repeated element adds style on a shoestring budget. The budget for “interior architecture” was low as a percentage of the project cost, because the labs and HVAC systems required big budgets in order to do the science properly and safely. Our scope of services included: Programming, Space Planning, Design Development, including the Selection and Specification of new Furniture, Construction Documents, including coordination with teams of lab designers and HVAC engineers, selected vendor Bidding, Construction and Installation observation/administration, and Punch List.

LS&A provided architecture and interior design services for the renovation of an old suburban office building into a home for a manufacturer of CD’s. Their customers were either in the music industry or the software industry, two very different types of people. Our design concept was to explain the manufacturing process and highlight advantages of KAO, give glimpses into the manufacturing plant, similar to holes in a construction fence. We found a light fixture for the tour that reflected a specular light similar to the light reflected off a CD. Office spaces and café integrated concepts from Japanese work-places and continued the modern look. Our scope of services included: Programming, Space Planning, Design Development, including the Selection and Specification of new Furniture, Construction Documents, including coordination with Engineers, selected vendor Bidding, Construction and Installation observation/administration, and Punch List.
