SUNDAY TIMES WITH A TWIST

I used the Sunday Times Newspaper to convey a speculative and hard hitting narrative about the Patent Laws making medicine inaccessible to the large majority of South African people. The newspaper contains only articles and stories related to the injustices done to people, the laws preventing change, government and organisations that have stalled, haltered or prohibited change from occurring and the effects it has had on South African citizens for the last 25 years.

It is a re-framing of the narrative told through the voices of people, activists and organisations involved in the Fix the Patent Laws campaign as well as related organisations. I have placed focus on the most critical issues and how these have unfolded through the years from 1994 to current day.

MY POSITION

My relation to the subject is that of a South African citizen. I was born in South Africa, only months after the 25-year struggle for access to affordable medicines began. My position is one of privilege, not previously disadvantaged and part of the minor middle class (14%). I grew up in, Port Elizabeth, a small town on the Eastern coast of South Africa.

I was fortunate/privileged enough to have private medical insurance growing up, so I never personally faced the struggles for access to medicines and the poor conditions of public health care systems, until more recent years, when diagnosed with a rare blood condition. I did, however, come into contact with many people who had unequal access to medical care and witnessed the tremendous disadvantages and struggles they had to face regularly.
