Brighton's Floating City Expansion

THE NEW GENERATION OF CITIES: BRIGHTON'S FLOATING CITY EXPANSION DESIGN PROJECT
(BArch Hons Architecture, THIRD YEAR)
My aim for this project was to address and discover a solution to the current national housing shortage in the UK. I selected Brighton, UK as my site location as there is a shortage of affordable houses as well as high levels of homelessness. My design offers an expansion off of Brighton's coastline. I researched floating city designs and adapted my ideas to provide a feasible response. The form of my building elements take inspiration from Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes as they were designed to be lightweight and self supporting. My project highlight's unique environmental strategies to make the new city self-sustainable. Each building element sits on a column-like foundation which rises and falls depending on the height of the tide. This creates the illusion of a floating city.
