Janelle designs in bold colors, but I see in black and white. This became the challenge I had to overcome, capturing the colorful essence of Janelle in monochromatic tones. Photographer Elliot Erwitt said, “Color is descriptive. Black and white is interpretive.” My photography background is in black and white film, and this field of photography has come to define my aesthetic. It is in the tones of black and white where I find my creative outlet. I have learned how to convey emotion in the absence of color by focusing my lense on what is most essential to the photograph. In this mind set, I spent hours following Janelle throughout the studio watching her create her final senior collection, letting tones, lighting, and texture guide my eye. Her process has inspired me to present the following collection of photographs:
A series where the color is in the interpretation.
