Illustrative "Summer Party" Poster

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:

The goal for this project was to design a visually interesting design in Illustrator that achieves unity with at least two elements and principles of design, uses an analogous color scheme, and uses color to enhance a simulated three-dimensional space. The focus was not on the concept/message of the poster, but rather the design elements and principles utilized. The typography’s purpose was not to convey a message but to be treated as just another object in the design.

MY PROCESS:

I wanted to create a poster inspired by a summer party in the 70’s, with lava lamps and psychedelic colors that “POP.” The three analogous hues used within the design are yellow-orange, orange, and red-orange, and I manipulated color to achieve a simulated three-dimensional space by gradually lightening and darkening tints of orange to simulate a roundness, reflections and shadows.

Along with the element of color, I also used form, space, and texture to achieve proportion and a perception of depth within the space. These elements create movement, both statically, as the eye naturally jumps between the different layered elements, and dynamically, as the eye follows the tear-shaped objects in a downward direction. Finally, the equal distribution of color and object weight achieve a sense of unity and balance.
