Shay Sora | Bachelor Project

"Do More, Use Less: Sustainable Design Application for Minimizing Waste" is the title of the bachelor thesis. The research focused on developing a sustainable system in Egypt by integrating designers into the processes. Waste material from different large industrial companies in Egypt were observed as well as the potential of small crafts workshops. Finally, glass was used as a case study for the project.
Glass from a large industrial company, Dr. Greich, was taken and reused by a small crafts workshop to develop "Shay Sora". The product is an everyday tea glass product that everyone in Egypt needs and uses. Materials used are minimal, natural and recyclable, including the glass, natural clay for the lids and trays, and reused rice remains for the packaging design.
Inspired by the droplet shape, each glass has its own character and function. The design integrates a cover to protect the tea from anything entering and keeps the tea hotter for longer. A dip inside the glasses allows the tea to be self-stirring and therefore need for an extra spoon is illimnated.

The products integrate designers to reuse waste materials and to allow craftsmen to make a living in the market and so sustainability is achieved.
