I focused my exploration for this project on a cross half lap joint. I was fascinated by how
this joint played both a role in the structure and aesthetics but also in the user
experience of a furniture piece. As this type of joint can slot and lock together without
the need of any additional fastener, it is often used in flat pack and user assembled
furniture. I aimed to exploit the advantages of the cross half lap joint to create
intersecting planes of material and color in this final furniture piece. Vertical and
horizontal supports create a structure to support a cushion that compresses to create
organic geometry that contrast the 90 degree angles of the rest of the piece. As it is
purchased as a flat pack and assembled by the customer, there are endless possibilities
of customization including options for size, color, material, and back support.
