New York and New Jersey Offer Hazmat Training

New York-based Highbury Concrete is a construction contractor that has contributed to the industry through developing innovations in safety. As a part of an effort to improve safety in the workplace, Highbury Concrete employs Hazmat responders on all job sites.

The primary role of the hazmat responder is to remove and dispose of radioactive waste, lead, asbestos, and other hazardous materials. New York and New Jersey offer its residents access to hazmat training programs through the New Jersey/New York Hazardous Training Center. The center aims to train workers about safety considerations at the clean-up site and factors related to generation, treatment, and storage of materials. It also focuses on getting workers to critically analyze potentially dangerous environments.

Workers seeking hazmat training can enroll in three programs. The Hazardous Waste Worker Training Program provides basic training in cleaning up and storage of hazardous waste materials. The HAZMAT Disaster Preparedness Training Program focuses on teaching prevention and preparedness strategies so that in case of a disaster, these strategies can positively impact the response. Finally, the Ebola Biosafety and Infectious Disease Response Training focus training workers in developing strategies to reduce risk to Ebola and other infectious diseases.

These programs were established on guidelines stipulated OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency response. Since the late 1980s, the program has trained more than 450,000 workers.
