Hamma-Head

Hamma-Head is a mobile, side-scrolling, endless runner. You control a construction robot with a hammer shaped head to wreak havoc, using hammer-like abilities in an infinitely generated environment. Travel great distances for as long as possible while having to avoid incoming obstacles, and destroy various enemy bots to obtain a high score.

This game was developed by a three person team, headed by Kibwe as the project manager. He handled the organizational aspects of the game, such as establishing and maintaining the project's Google Drive folders to store art, presentations, game builds, audio, etc. He also served as a flex programmer, level designer, cover designer, social media person, and concept writer for documents like the artist statement, development road map, and design doc.

The lead programmer is Taevian Barnes, who created the GitHub repository for our game and also serves as a partial level designer and quality assurance person.

And the lead artist and animator is Barrington Scott, who designed our main Hamma-Head character and nearly all of our game visuals, like the background assets, platforms, enemies & buzz saws, and also serves as a flex programmer. Barrington also set up the itch page for our game.

Character Evolution
We wanted to base our character off of a hammer with a sleek design so he could appear more aerodynamic, since this is an endless runner. We also wanted him to be able to hang off the edge of platforms, giving players a chance to pull themselves up from mistimed jumps. Barrington's first design of our character was cute and simple, and its head shape gave it the ability to hang off platforms if need be. His second design for our character gave it a cooler look and allowed us more flexibility with animations because of a full body we could work with.
Running demonstration on our infinite mode
The main mechanic of using your head to destroy enemies during a run was initiated to differentiate from standard endless running games, in which the main objective is for the player to run for as long as they can, while gathering collectibles to earn a high score. It’s a subtle metaphor for acting out against a neglectful corporation, as our protagonist was perverted by his creators to build a world according to their liking, until he goes against his programming and breaks out of his facility.

Our game allows players to control a character who is able to use his hammer head to break through obstacles and smash through opposing robots, as well as use his head to hold onto the sides of platforms to save themselves from falls. This symbolizes people who use their head to take matters into their own hands, to leave jobs they don’t like and to build their own career paths with their creativity, wisdom, and knowledge.
