A Clockwork Orange City

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE CITY

This cinematic video was a part of the 2018 Cardiff University MA Urban Design Graduation Design Project, which try to test the relationship between film and place. Based on research materials, this video shows the comprehensive atmosphere of Thamesmead where Kubrick's film A Clockwork Orange was shot.

This project was 2019 National Urban Design Award Nominated Student Award, I would like to express my appreciation to my tutor Dr. Noha Nasser.
(The project isn't commercial project, if you want to use the content, please contact me in advance)

Film Stills
The making of this video began with four rebuilding scenes from Kubrick's film A Clockwork Orange about my design site, Thamesmead. These iconic scenes strongly link the space impressions with the film.

Original Film Scenes in A Clockwork Orange
Scenes like the iconic tunnel and the triangle landscapes before houses are completely rebuilt as the original scenes, while the scene at lakeside was combined from several shots into one composition.
Environment Expansion
Based on my visiting of Thamesmead, I build more space in the same style to extend the atmosphere in a bigger picture.
Style of Atmosphere
I decide to set this video majorly in a  night scene to enhance the mystery feeling. The video starts with several dusk scenes as like the lakeside scene in A Clockwork Orange, then I used a transition bringing the site into the evening time.
Opening Transition from day to night
In the early stage, I used this scene to test the overall lighting style and applied to other night scenes.
Birds
There few people moving in this whole film, but I put several scenes with birds flying or standing to create certain movements and also produce a contrast.
Railway
Most spaces in the film are silent with only small elements moving. To add more dynamic scenes, I set a series of railway shots and make a train went by at a high speed.
Shake Effect was added to create a more powerful impact on the screen
Detail Shots
Besides, some spaces were modeled on a detailed scale to make this world more real. Some elements were inspired by the film A Clockwork Orange such as those hats and the poster.
