Wearable Art = /= Wearable Fashion

What is wearable-art? From a very rudimentary perspective it is a concept; a form of expression that designers and non-designers use to represent their vision of dress as a subject. The first wearable art was created in 1840’s by the Pre-Raphaelites who wanted to bring a change is the sense of clothing. The primary purpose of any garment is to provide comfort, conceal and protect but gradually the notion moved to a different direction. Art and Fashion individually hold a very strong meaning in themselves and if used inspirationally they can create an extraordinary synthesis, but when fashion tries to pretend to be a form of art, does it wander aimlessly like a rent cloud, serving no particular purpose?  designers became too occupied with the idea of fashion as art and tried to bring artistic theory and method to the craft of fashion. While, the intention may have been to actually critically examine dress and the construction and presentation of identity, what happened was a digression from common sense. Over the years, fashion designers have become famous for exactly the opposite. Their work often seems ‘non-relatable’, ‘incomprehensible’ and ‘not suitable for everyday life.’ This elitism, while it gives fashion a certain aura, has also become its very curse.
