Web design for multiple devices

Part 3 design practise module, University of Reading

Design brief

– To understand the design issues involved in responsive web design
– To explore how a design can work across multiple devices and screen sizes
– To work within constraints of technology and systems
Your task is to develop a responsive design for the Oxford Times website. There is an existing newspaper website, with separate unconnected views for desktop browsers and mobiles. The website is difficult to use and lacks cohesion. You should come up with a better solution.

Key points:
– Design should put the user first. Think about what they will do when they visit the website. How will they interact with the content?
– Presentation of final solutions is up to you. You don’t have to code anything and could just present design solutions as PDFs.
– You need to provide a detailed specification of all of the pages.

Deliverables:
– Design three specific pages; home, a section (e.g. culture) and news story
– Design for three breakpoints; desktop, tablet and mobile
– That means nine separate designs in total to submit
– All pages must include multiple adverts in different sizes
– Develop a grid system to work across all page types and breakpoints
