Contemporary Paper Mache

Inspired by Mexican terra-cotta , these sculptures incorporate paper mache and soil. As primitive Mexican artists would create sculptures from the dirt of their land, I create sculptures from the dirt of my land. As a Mexican who resides this far up north, the sculptures take on a darker look; the dirt of American soil.

To satisfy the standards of what defines classical fine art, this series looks to create trompe l’oeil stone like finishes made completely out of paper mache. Looking to further recontextualize the piñata by creating textures reminiscent of stones like granite, limestone or marble.
