Personal Belongings

Personal Belongings, Fall 2019 - Present

In this on-going series, I use my camera to cope with the lived realities of my paternal and maternal grandmothers as their health declines. I focus on elements of class and heritage to draw parallels between their experiences. In this contrast, I use their possessions and loved ones as evidence of their fruitful lives before this day in time. Each new day is flooded with rituals and responsibilities. These practices are often taken on as a group effort by my family in their efforts to delay the day in which we must let go. Time is a cruel and honest friend. This work questions the difference between memories as solidly formed moments from the past and memory as an ever-changing collection of them. In this process, I reflect on my mental health as I reach toward adulthood and struggle to come to terms with the inevitable tragedies my family must face in the foreseeable future.
