ART 121 Observational Drawing
The goal for this project in ART 121 Observational Drawing was to create positive and negative shapes from the still life in class. I began by sketching different thumbnails to get the concept for the final drawing. I learned for this assignment to look at the negative spaces between the objects instead of drawing the actual objects. I first used pencil to draw the negative shapes while using my strategies of measuring with my pencil. The picture plane is accurately plotted to represent what is actually seen. Once my composition had a sense of positive forms accurately depicted only using negative spaces, I filled in the negative spaces with black. I used brush and ink and also sharpie to refine the edges. The negative spaces are solid black which maintain the integrity of the image's positive/negative relationships. This composition has nice unity and variety; from the wheel to the hanging pots.
