The Bengal culture and theme converted to achieve fashion look.
“ETHNICITY IN FASHION” Workshop - Editorial Photo shoot
Today, fashion is not only innovative in producing new looks—it also witnesses diffusion of cultural practices. A cultural symbol in one country might end up as a fashion statement in another. Fashionable garment is an amalgamation of several dress separates with a certain number of implicit variants such as form, movement, stiffness, identity, etc. which constitutes a syntagm comprising several elements. Fashion theorists consider it as a case of symbolic interaction ism, where every individual makes decisions and forms opinions from their own interpretation and evaluation.
METHOD
Students built up cohesive fashion looks (from head to toe) inspired by the ethic details of their states. The looks must be well researched and respond to the latest fashion trends. Students designed profound mood-boards that show a model type, hair/ make-up details, and accessories. Fashionable looks show good understanding of colour theory, design basics and fashion communication.
For five of pupils in the group the theme was to express the ethnicity of India. one from Kerala (significance - gold look), then Madhya Pradesh (significance - Birds in headgear), Assam (significance - a piece of particular cloth famous in her state i.e Mekhla Chaddar), Bihar (sigificance - the crop field) and West Bengal (significance - the traditional "Dhoti" worn during marraige ceremony by groom).
For me, being belonging to Kolkata, my theme should be based on making a closer Bengal look expressed in fashion. In that way I collected resources taking the help from my family members. The sari worn by the model is actually the 'DHOTI' I borrowed from my father which is generally worn by him during his marriage ceremony. That helped me to create an atmosphere expressing the Bengali feel but more in a fashionable way. The final aim was to attain fashion as the ultimate thing.
