Adaptable Walls

The studio produced a collective Catalog of the performative and pleasurable values of vestigial architectural parts in relationship to their disappearance. The Catalog explores the methods that architectural parts can orchestrate their inherent performative possibilities alongside modern inventions in new and fantastic ways, which re-defines human-environmental comfort and inviting new architectural parts & collisions along the way.

The studio then proceeded to propose a theoretical invention that reflects on the function served by the previously investigated vestigial part.

The Russian Door Balcony serves as a respite for residents in the crowded, densely built up New York City. By having floors and walls that can be pulled out/tucked back in, it allows flexibility in outdoor spaces for convening.
The social aspect of courtyards was reimagined in this system of adaptable walls, where the walls retract into one another and are able to slide laterally to create flexible spaces for the individual inhabitant. This allows for customization of one's social activities and interactions with adjacent neighbors.
