Parametric Reception Desk

Parametric Reception Desk
Private commission, UTA CAPPA design proposal

Arlington, Texas, 2015. Designed by Jonathan Essary, John Chow, and Christopher Laskoski

Parametric Reception Desk is an application of the contouring design method developed as a parametric design for flat material fabrication. A Rhino/Grasshopper model processes the relation of guide curves and perpendicular section frames to sculpt the subtle curvature of static motion. The contouring body sections follow the curvature providing openness for the appearance of institutional transparency and closed moments for physical security. The functional desk is designed for two workstations, sign-in table, 42” and ADA counter heights, and three storage compartments. Its overall shape is derived by the flow and use of faculty and visitors. The materiality of plywood and white Corian strike a balance of present and futuristic experience supporting artistic expression while maintaining functionality.
