Cottage Industry Hopes & Dreams Chair

Cottage Industry Hopes & Dreams Chair

The past few months I have been thinking about how much I enjoy living within a home, and my idealizations about a future domestic lifestyle. At this current stage of my life, I feel as though these domestic dreams are somewhat out of reach, as the straightforward career path would be move to a big city, get an apartment, and live in an impermanent state for awhile. Because of this, I have been thinking about my ideal combination of work and home, which I believe is the cottage industry form of making. I am very fond of the Folly Cove Designers and the way that their work was focused on community and staying true to the area they called home. In reference to the Folly Cove Designers Diploma, the chair skirt shows imagery of the various steps involved in the fabric silkscreen process. The imagery on the rest of the chair is that of an idealized neighborhood scene and I choose sunrise and sunset colors to represent the amount of time spent in a loved home. Through this chair, I wanted to honor both the cottage industry of the past, and my hopes and dreams of working this way in the future.
