The Newport Congregational Church at Newport, RI is known for its murals and stained glass work by renowned artist John Lafarge which has accorded the building its landmark status. However, of late the church has seen very low attendance and has not been very economically viable. My project is to propose an Ice skating rink in the nave area. Ice skating is a popular winter activity of the town/ community. The proposed rink will be a very different experience as opposed to the open rink down the block at present because of the environs within the church. With the daylight streaming in through LaFarge’s opalescent stained glass windows colouring the ice, the rink’s shape allowing one to pass close by his murals and the embedded fibre optic lighting underneath the ice, it could prove to be an attractive and artistic way of getting the community together during the winters.Where as during the summer months, the ice skating rink panels can be easily removed to allow for a roller-skating rink. The seldom used balcony is now proposed as a spectators’ area with cafe(s) for light refreshments. The easy to remove panels of the rink also allow for the resumption of church of church activities whenever the need be. I believe this proposal could prove to be a decisive step towards the revival of the Newport Congregational as a economically viable place which will bring the community together promoting healthy interaction and a strong community feeling.
