Contemporary Rocking Chair

For my A Level final year project I decided that I would revolutionise the rocking chair which is stereo-typically an old and vintage product associated with the elderly. I wanted to change this image and design a contemporary product that attracted teenagers and young adults. I had numerous ideas but the design I went with was a semi circular form that the user would lie down in. I quickly modelled this using cardboard and wood to understand the form more. Having done this I worked out the dimensions and drew it up life size! I then got people to lie down on it in order to develop the shape and curve of the seat. However by doing this I discovered that the overhead design was not possible if the product was meant to be used inside. I therefore developed the design to be more like a quarter circle and modelled it again. Next I worked out how I would manufacture the product. I made the seat and structure separately, both with a strut-like system between two outer panels. I then screwed the two structures together before attaching a sheet of flex-plywood to act as the seat. This was a challenge due to the curved nature of the seat. However I managed it by using many clamps and plenty of wood glue. Once dry I painted the seat a contrasting bright red. Finally I glued the side panels on to complete the product
