Wintersession 2020: Papermaking

Wintersession 2020: Papermaking
Throughout the course, students were challenged to reconsider the use of typical, standard paper.
In the beginning of the term, we began by cutting cotton clothes and abaca strips to produce shredded fibers, then beating Kozo (Japanese Mulberry) to produce pulp–experiencing the process of attaining fibers from both recycling cloth and directly from plants.
After learning how to create our own paper, i.e. unique surfaces, I began to experiment by drawing with wire and paper. While working, I reflected upon the dialogue between plants, the paper they make, and the memory that they retain in relation to time and the land they come from.
Final
The detail photos of my final highlight the various methods used to produce colors–such as utilizing the natural color of the fiber, imbedding rusted wires into the paper, painting with watercolor, and mixing colored pulps.
