Illustrations for the Folk tale week marathon
Since the topic of the marathon is folk tales, I wanted to design an original character based on Slavic tales and myths. I named the character Kalina and she is an ancient spirit, half girl, half fox that protects her forest and tricks those who dare to enter it.
Though I wanted to bring the associations with Slavic culture, the idea of the character came to me while researching Berber symbols and tattoos so I decided to incluse some of them as well. I've found that Slavic and Berber styles and symbols go really nice together.

I've decided to make Kalina's house a fox hole which makes perfect sence not only because she is half-fox but also because this type of house was really wide spread among the ancient Slavic people.

Inside her house should be quite dark since it's mostly made of the ground and the roots of the rowan tree that help its structure can do a good service as well.
