Design Programming - Student Work
Using the programming language ‘Processing’ I was tasked with creating an interactive generative artwork. I really enjoyed this project as it taught me a lot about programming in a very responsive and visual way. My tutor noticed my enthusiasm and displayed the work in a student exhibition at a different university (UNSW). This gave me the deadline of the exhibition to meet, rather than the final assessment deadline, giving me about half the allocated time to finish the project. But it got done and I was really happy with the way it looked and how people danced around in front and interacted with the work.
The work itself captures the moment of a sunset over rolling waves, with the light of the sun being caught by the peaks of the waves, creating playful shadows. The interaction was facilitated by a Microsoft Kinect that tracked viewer’s position in the space in-front of the work, and adjusted the hue of the ocean, sun and sky using complimentary colours based on the viewer’s position. The viewer’s location was captured and processed in real time, so they could move around in-front of the work and playfully change the colours of the scenery.
