This project was a collaboration between RISD's Graduate Student Alliance and The Steel Yard, also located here in Providence. It was essentially a design-build meant to address RISD's dearth of on/near campus bike racks while also providing visual interest to Weybosset Street and creating a new branding opportunity for the school.
My role was essentially that of project manager; leading the student design team and coordinating with administrative people at RISD as well as our contacts at The Steel Yard. The student design team was comprised of myself and three other graduate RISD students, all of whom contributed to the final design.
The renderings shown at the bottom of this page were created by the other members of the student team and they reflect the agreed-upon design decisions that we made as a team. While I did not create these drawings myself, I did compile them into the presentation layout and author all of the associated text.
The final design itself was meant not only to accommodate bike parking but to also create a shelving system so that users gain the option of setting their belongings on the rack itself while locking or unlocking the bike. Each individual rack is also rotated about its own central axis at varying angles, so that the experience of walking past them becomes unique as well.
