Longitudinal cross-section of the walrus tusk

Medieval european ivory exchange networks
The walrus tusk is a modified upper canine that has been substantially elongated. Walrus ivory has some specific characteristics, which allow it to be distinguished from other types of ivory:
• Primary dentine is the ivory, it has a slightly darker color than elephant ivory;
• Dentine forms the ivory divided into primary and secondary — which differ in structural
and aesthetic properties.
