The sophomore final project entailed fabricating an object which can support human weight.  I began by reasearch a traditional construction process. Alaskan Inuit Kayak construction.  Constructed of Ash, all the joints are lashed together in the same way a kayak would be, and the final peice involves a 27 component construction of runners, leg sections and bent ribs.  The ribs were bent using a hot pipe.  This is a process by which the member is soaked, and then rolled over a heated iron pipe, and allowed to dry in am adjustable jig.  This adjustment allowed for the controlled tapering of the elements.  The keystone peice which runs along the bottom center is carved on the end to allow for a hand hold.  My intent was to generate an object that was strong, but also ultra lightweight.  It responds to the sitter and bends slightly under your weight, and lends itself to someone moving and adjusting their feet as they sit.  I hope to distill this system down more, and develop a furniture set in the form of chairs, stools and benches.
