A conservation and pro-hunting organization founded in 1984, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) works to ensure a healthy future for elk and their habitats. To that end, the RMEF focuses on elk restoration in historic ranges where habitat and cultural tolerance make free-ranging elk herds a possibility. After conducting feasibility studies and developing projects in conjunction with universities and state wildlife agencies, RMEF volunteers help trap wild elk from a source herd and transfer them to ancestral grounds. These elk are monitored for several years to study movement patterns and survival rates. The RMEF has conducted successful elk restoration projects in Wisconsin, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia.
