Michael Hatch's profile

Len Lye Waterfront Gallery

This project  explored the relationship between art and architecture through the work of Len Lye (1901 - 1980). Widely regarded as one of the most original artists ever to have emerged from New Zealand, Len Lye had great passion for movement and the way in which it could be created and represented. He believed that movement could be used as a basis for a completely new kind of art, “the art of motion”.

Beneath the Taranaki Street Bridge on Wellington's Waterfront the design of this art gallery aims to exhibit Lye's Flip & Two Twisters in a unique and challenging fashion, allowing for the viewer to experience the movement of the work through, sound, movement and light before viewing the work in its entirety.  Below is a breif video of Len Lye's sculpture.
