This work was created to help my 7-year-old neighbour, Kyleigh, who gets frustrated doing homework. Research for this project included interviews with Kyleigh, her mother, a first grade teacher and a visit to Kyleigh’s classroom, as well as secondary research around study spaces, light and aroma therapy. Habitat creates a positive environment for Kyleigh to study in that is distinct from the rest of her house. Designed with fun and calming elements: the structure lets in light, creating a stain-glass window effect inside; has vinyl panels that allow her to write on the walls; and includes pillows scented with essential oils that help reduce anxiety and increase focus.
