This mango knife was designed with a simple and clean form to effortlessly accomplish the task of serving mangoes. Its design was inspired by the simplicity and efficiency of stone age cutting tools. The knife body is composed of ceramic and the rounded shape fits in the palm with ease. Its design is simple but functional, as it completes the 3 tasks involved with the preparation of mangoes for consumption.
Many clay prototypes were created to explore and develop the form of the knife.
I soon came to realize that clay was not the ideal material for works-like prototypes, because it did not have the enough structural integrity and ended up crumbling when pressure was applied to the blade.
A final works-like model was carved out of carved pine as the hand grip to withstand pressure when cutting, and a piece of tin as the blade.
The bottom blade of the knife is first used to slice the mango fruit off of the pit. The side edge is then used to slice the mango into cubes within its skin. Finally, the rounded edge of the knife blade scoops the fruit out of its skin leaving cubes of mango ready to enjoy!
A final looks-like model was carved out of high density urethane foam to capture the final form of the knife.
