Icebox

Art Direction, Design: Joel Berroteran

My goal was to illustrate the current state of immigrants being detained in inhumane conditions. Visualizing Ice box, I imagined the setting to be cold, trapped, contained, isolated and lifeless. The separation of families along with children and their parents has repeated throughout history, where one would think that it would have ceased to exist. Children are in facilities taking care of each other, rather than adults or their own caregivers nurturing for them. These facilities are known as Ice Boxes due to the harsh and unethical environment. For those who are fleeing, it is better to risk it all to find safety from the violence and lawlessness of their own home country than to stay and live hopelessly. However, instead of providing shelter as a form of refuge, these detained immigrants endure these Ice Box conditions hoping to have a chance to live without fear and desiring a better life for their families and future generations.
