Solar Decathlon Europe 2019 | SOMEshine

Nemzetközi építészeti verseny
Szentendre - Sopron - Miskolc | 2018
For the Solar Decathlon international architecture competition to be held in Szentendre in 2019 the SOMEshine team deals with the issues of the Hungarian “Cube Houses”. As the primary and most important objective is to create an “Eco House”, we put the cubicle house into a new foundation in our concept, retaining the original floor plan and form, but rethinking it with the involvement of modern materials and technologies.
Part of our concept is the use of innovative natural materials developed by Sopron University. SOMEshine is a project between the University of Miskolc and the University of Sopron, where the engineering and the artistic approach meet.

In the 1950s these buildings changed and modernized the original Hungarian farmhouse. With the loss of transition spaces such as a porch we also lost the natural harmonic connection with nature. This reveals an iconic period of time in the Hungarian history of architecture. The main idea of our concept is turning back this kind of mentality and behaviour but in an modern-day context. In our project we would like to set an example for people living in cube houses of how to re-interpret the connection of house and environment and how to take into account natural forces and physical phenomena for an ideal relationship between humans and nature.

Our project is not just about designing an energy-efficient house which gives social solutions to its residents. With its stratified unity, the SOMEshine house has an inseparable rapport with its surrounding area, even within in the assigned 20×20 m2.
Our architectural concept is based on stratification around a central core, organising the building’s functionality and spatiality, which is basically a closed cube containing variable built-in furniture on its outer surface and a bathroom inside. Other layers consist of different living spaces formed by the natural orientation. The unconventional floor plan creates variations for different usages.
