The portrait is completed, then on the same wood/gessoed surface is the painted faux frame, that continues on the sides...

This oil painting, study of Jan Van Eyck's portrait of his 30 year old wife, I began in a summer painting class under the tutolale of John Micheal-Angel, then co- head of the Florence Academy of Art, Italy. He was teaching a session at the American Academy of Art, where I was a student, and then also a teacher. circa 1994

Fun with updating and moving textures and colors in new proportions for the late 20th century. Maybe its time to do it again, 20 more years later...........
