The goal of this drawing series was to explore the unnoticed spaces, landscapes, and structures that make up the forgotten backdrop of urban life. Telephone poles, cell phone towers, parking garages, highway overpasses, sky contrails—all of these structures are monumental in size, figural in character, and sculptural in design. And yet, they inhabit our mind as non-objects, and inevitably disappear into the landscape. I believe omnipresent spaces like this occupy a lonely corner of both the material world and the cultural imagination. These spaces also reflect the normalization and standardization of our environmental footprint. They are unavoidable and recurring, yet ignored and disregarded. I wanted to emphasize the strangeness and uncanniness of these urban liminal spaces/objects by situating them alongside the dreamlike, strange and surreal.
