Hansel & Gretel Illustration Project

Brief: use the tale Hansel & Gretel to create 6 images using analogue and digital image-making processes to a target an audience of your choice.

Solution: through research I found a lack of image-based novels that weren’t in the comic realm. I decided to address this void in the market and chose to target an adult audience of 25-45 who preferred imaged based story telling. I used a mixture of techniques including linocut, watercolour and acrylic painting, monoprint and digital illustration using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I focused a lot on texture and colour to create depth and atmosphere which I think I succeeded in doing.

I really enjoyed working with analogue and digital processes. I found it challenging to produce pieces that didn’t look like they belong in a comic, which I think they do. However, I learned a lot about about creating a visual language and cohesion for a series of images. I also learned a lot about the printing process and colour. There were many re-prints and errors made, but in the end managed to figure it out which was hugely beneficial.
