Story Telling Design Project

Introduction: The project that I am going to be showing you is my final project in my Design course. I am currently studying art, and design at George Brown College. Project 3 was a visual narrative composition. The objective of this assignment was to tell a story, express your ideas, and create some sort of meaning to this art work through the abstract use of elements of art, and principles of form.

Materials:
-Hot press board
-Tracing Paper
-Images of myself taken by Photographer : Brent Symth
-Ruler
-Tape
-Pencils
-Bowl to draw compass
-Black & Red Sharpie
-Scissors
-Supreme Book
-Glue Stick

Creative Process: Abstract is a new concept for me as an artist. This project brought me out of my comfort zone, and I enjoyed the challenges that came with it. My creative process was to show a story using windows, and dividing my art piece into 4 pictures. I wanted to use pictures of myself for each window. The idea came to me when looking through pictures, and when my friend did a photoshoot for me. After I came up with the the images I let my mind finish the rest. I began drawing symbols that mean a lot to me such as roses, compasses, and clocks. I wanted this project to represent me who I am today, and where I have been.

Above, these are the pictures I used for my project 3 taken by Brent Smyth. I used these to tell a story in my project. These photographs were all taken on the same day, so it worked out well with the idea I had for the project.
I started tracing each photograph with tracing paper.
I continued tracing each picture with tracing paper, using tape, and pencils.
In the picture above, these are the materials I used for the first part of creating the project.
I then drew a circle in the middle of my hot press board, to divide my creative ideas.
I then started drawing a compass, which then lead to be drawing a clock using roman numerals.
My next step was to place the images that I traced on my hot press board.
I then started drawing and outlining the images surrounding the clock with a black sharpie marker.
This is what it looked like once I finished the drawings of myself on the hot press board.
I wanted to divided the board into 4 different windows in a sense. I made a cross throughout the board, and outlined it in black.
i then started drawing roses around the clock to make it look like they were coming out of the middle. Since the objective of this project was abstract, I kinda just went along with what I felt looked interesting.
I wanted to add some graphics, and images from a Supreme book I had from a few years ago. I cut out red images, because my colour scheme was mostly black and white, and I thought the red would make my artwork pop.
I started putting the images on the board to visualize where I wanted to place them, and then plan out the background.
For the top left, and the bottom right windows, I wanted to go with one being where I am from (Ottawa), and where I currently live today (Toronto). The other windows were just random ideas that came to my mind using line, and shapes, and different elements of that I have learned throughout my design course.
I started creating lines for the background.
I then glued the supreme pictures onto the board, and continued drawing the background of each window, trying to make it abstract art.

At this point in the project, I wasn't sure whether or not to draw in the roses with a red marker. I left this for a few days, but I finally went ahead and did it. I was happy with the outcome, and results.
FINAL WORK: Above is the final copy of my work.

Conclusion: After completing this project, some of the takeaways that I got from it are this is good practice when completing any artwork, or project regarding art. Often when you just see an artists final work, you don't realize how much time, and effort went into it. This project was an eyeopening experience that helped me appreciate art just a little more. Some challenges that I came across when completing this project is that I found myself forgetting to take pictures of the process. At times, I would be in the zone and simply forget to stop for a minute and take a picture. A breakthrough that I realized what to plan on what I was going to do next, that way I could stop and take the photographs, and follow the guidelines of the assignments. When thinking about what I might have done differently next time, I would have maybe got someone else to take the pictures of myself doing the art. I think this would have been cool to see for the viewers, and provide more visuals of the art I completed.
