The center text is an excerpt from Chanel Miller's statement to Brock Turner in court. It is a powerful reminder about the violence that women endure and our justice system's failures. The wrapped text is a quote from Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. When I read Miller's letter, I immediately thought of one of my favorite quotes. All of the irrelevant questions thrown at Miller are yet another way of keeping women in the margins. Atwood's comment on how women are forced to adapt to this status and inequality indicates this.
Denim Day 2019
I am a girl, a female always in danger of assault and battery. My consuming interest in men and their lives is often misconstrued as a desire to seduce them or as an invitation to intimacy. Yet, God, I want to talk to everybody I can as deeply as I can. I want to sleep in an open field, to travel west, to walk freely at night. - Sylvia Plath
Waste Mismanagement
In honor of Earth Day 2019. Mother Earth cries oceans of tears and will continue to unless we take action now. Hokusai's 'Great Wave' was replicated by hand for this.
