Proteus anguinus parkelj (common name: olm or proteus) is an amphibian urodel belonging to the Proteidae family.
Unlike most amphibians, is a completely aquatic species.
Named for its black pigmentation and highly developed eyes, it was first discovered in 1986 by members of the Slovenian Karst Research Institute (ZRC SAZU) during the exploration of the Karst source of Dobličica, in the White Carniola (Slovenia) , is endemic to groundwater around Črnomelj, an area less than 100 square kilometers in size.
