Fire Sweeps but Heart Stays

Fire Sweeps but Heart Stays (High Dynamic Range)
Klenteng Petak 9 (Petak 9 Temple), Jakarta
This temple, one of the oldest and largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia, was caught in flames some time in 2015. This is one of the room where that the fire touch, as seen from the scorched walls. Some of the plates that the monks usually used were placed there near the kitchen sink. Now imagine the people who used to cook, who used to bring those dining ware and wash those, on this sink. That same scorched wall will now be their views everyday, which will certainly bring them nothing but bad memories and pain.
The sacred temple remains to be one of the best tourism attraction place in the middle of crowded Jakarta streets. This temple is located in the middle of the forest of homes, arranged in tight manner with only some small paved roads separating them from places to places. The outside of the temple is a place for merchants selling foods and souvenirs. The monks usually come out and walk the road, meeting people, and come back again to pray.
Besides monks, people still come to this place every day to pray. Raging flames swept away this temple but the heart of the people lingered on, until today. During the time of the photograph, some debris and ruins were still left in their original places, which were separated so nobody could come in. Some of them were recovered. During the day, rocks on top of rocks blocked the light from the sun, casting long shadows, which at times felt like the souls of the passed away trying to pick those up and returning them back to where they belong. But woods have now turned to ashes and charcoals. Even with strong wills nothing in this world will be able to turn those back to the furniture that used to be placed on some rooms for people to sit down and pray. All that is left now are memories written on the walls as brunt black scratches.
