Sol Weekly Newspaper: new logo

Sol Weekly Newspaper: new logo

Sol weekly newspaper was established as a new journalistic project completely different from other Portuguese newspaper. As a start, the name chosen for it is rather unusual in the Portuguese printed media scene (Sol means “sun” in Portuguese). It invokes the star whose role is to light vast areas as well as long distances.

This characteristic is the fundamental concept for the newspaper’s new logo. This new “sun” stands as a metaphor for the new editorial project that aims to shine light on the minds of its readers with news and information in a serious and committed way.

Therefore, a logo was created conveying brightness, humbleness and inexorableness. In order to do so, it was important to find a font with contrast and no serifs able to create a lot of negative space around it (light) with only uppercase letters. The uppercase letters were important to allow the logo and the name of the newspaper to be noticed. That was possible with Montserrat font from Google Fonts using its medium weight.

Besides that, something more should be part of the logo: a symbol representing the inexorableness of the sun. So, the asterisk from the same font was the best choice. However, its position was very important. As a result, it was placed on the top right corner of the final logo standing there shining permanently.

In the end, the final logo is a humble visual solution suitable for both print and digital contexts.

This is merely an academic project. I do not own any rights to use the label Sol or the name of the newspaper.
