Material Exploration

This project was done to experiment with the machine Hollander beater. A Hollander beater is a machine developed by the Dutch in 1680 to produce paper pulp from cellulose containing plant fibres. As this experiment was done during the fall in Netherlands, maple leaves were found in abundance on the streets every morning. They seemed like a potential alternative raw material.
After collecting the leaves, they were put in hollander for an hour. The slurry was then filtered, the water was used as an dye where as the shredded leaves were then dried, they were then mixed with different binders, natural and artificial.
These different samples were then dried naturally or using a dryer or a heat-press. Once they were completely dried, each sample was examined. Based on the characteristics of the sample applications were thought of.
The sample which was made using potato starch and glycerine, can be used as packaging material for snacks replacing the single use plastics.
Another sample which was made using cornstarch was used as a lamp. Cornstarch turns transparent once it dries, because of which it gave a glittery effect to the sample. The lamp looked liked twinkling stars.
