The Slav Epic limited edition photography book

epos book

The idea behind this limited edition photography book is to give a new life to Alphonse Mucha's Slav Epic cycle. Each of the 20 large-format paintings was photographed in 1:1 ratio by Jan William Drnek. The paintings have made a transition from the gallery to digital photography and by means of a unique printing technology they re-entered the physical world through this book. The Slav Epic is full of thoughts, ideas, layers, meanings and symbolism but the book's aim is to let the viewer freely decide which message to consider the most important. The design of the whole piece was approached in the same way - basic information related to the paintings are briefly presented by the short texts and several easy-to-follow infographics. The design-austere case (manually produced by studio Cincera) serves not only as a protection but also as a temple where one can comfortably browse the book. It makes the paintings and their beauty stand out, and while using the magnifying glass the viewer has an incredible chance to observe the paintings as if being in the gallery. Even the 2,5x enlargement doesn't allow to see the print points. Every book has been manualy book binded. Each set also includes one piece of jewellery designed by Alphonse Mucha's granddaughter Jarmila Mucha Plockova; and three unique stones brought from three Slav Epic related destinations. All the craftsmanship makes each set an original.
